Short Biography

Dr. Wei-Yi Song is a Clinical Professor in the UBC Department of Psychiatry, and has served as the Discipline Specific Site Leader (DSSL) for Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) in Psychiatry on Vancouver Island since 2007. He previously served as Associate Program Director for the Victoria-track psychiatry residency program, as well as the Psychiatry UGME Program Director for several years, during which he played an instrumental role in establishing the first Island Medical Program clerkship.  

A Department member since 2005, Dr. Song is also Department Head of psychiatry and Executive Medical Director of Mental Health and Substance Use in Island Health. In this leadership role, he oversees mental health and substance-related medical services across Island Health, also guiding the development of medical practice standards and supporting Island Health psychiatrists who are engaged in research and medical education. In 2017, Dr. Song was elected as the President of the Canadian Psychiatric Association and was notably the first CPA president of East Asian decent.  

Clinical Focus

Dr. Song’s clinical focus lies in inpatient psychiatry outpatient mood / anxiety / bipolar / psychosis, and his research interests include sublingual ketamine in treatment resistant depression, psychoeducation/QoL in bipolar disorder, and long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics in schizoaffective disorder.
